Perché gli USA usano Letter e Legal invece di A4 — storia, dimensioni e standard ANSI.

Mentre la maggior parte del mondo usa ISO 216 (A4, A3...), gli USA, il Canada, il Messico e le Filippine seguono un altro sistema.

Origine del formato Letter

Letter (8,5 × 11 pollici = 216 × 279 mm) deriva dalla tradizione coloniale americana. Con la macchina da scrivere, Letter era già lo standard.

Formati ANSI

Nel 1996, ANSI ha formalizzato i formati in ANSI/ASME Y14.1:

  • ANSI A — 8,5 × 11 pol (Letter)
  • ANSI B — 11 × 17 pol (Tabloid)
  • ANSI C — 17 × 22 pol
  • ANSI D — 22 × 34 pol
  • ANSI E — 34 × 44 pol
